From First Steps to Real Games: Tornadukai & Tornadiečiai Cups
Tornado Basketball School Internal Championship: from first steps to real game experience
Every year, the “Tornado” Basketball School organizes an internal championship for young players of different age groups. This tournament brings together beginner training groups – from primary school students to older athletes who are not yet playing in the main teams. The goal of the championship is to provide children with as much game experience as possible, develop their love for basketball, and gradually prepare them for a higher competitive level.
Tornadukai Cup – first steps towards competitive basketball
The youngest players (born in 2016 and younger) compete in the “Tornadukai” Cup. During the regular season, 10 teams participated, of which 8 advanced to the playoffs. The main goal of this cup is to help children get used to the rhythm of games and prepare for the upcoming MKL season. Although some players are already taking their first steps in school teams, the number of games is still limited, making this internal championship a very important part of their development. The regular season of the “Tornadukai” Cup has already finished, and the playoffs have begun.

Learning through the game
Until the semifinals, games are officiated by the coaches themselves. They know their players well, which allows them to evaluate situations more flexibly and let children learn from mistakes in real game situations. From the semifinals onward, professional referees take over – all official rules apply, and players experience real competitive basketball. According to coach Emilijus Petrauskas, this system helps children grow naturally: “The most important thing this tournament gives is love for basketball. Kids want to play, want to improve, and every game is a celebration for them. During games, they learn not only the rules but also confidence, decision-making, and teamwork.”

Tornadiečiai Cup – an opportunity for everyone to grow
For older players, the “Tornadiečiai” Cup is organized and divided into three age groups:
  • Born in 2014–2015 (8 teams, 6 advanced to playoffs)
  • Born in 2012–2013 (8 teams, 6 advanced to playoffs)
  • Born in 2009–2011 (7 teams, 6 advanced to playoffs)
These groups include players who are not yet members of the main school teams but for whom gaining game experience is especially important. During the tournament, players not only compete for wins but also learn key basketball skills in real game situations – from decision-making to team communication.

Long-standing tradition and opportunity to stand out
As emphasized by director Dainius Čiuprinskas, these tournaments have been an integral part of the school for many years: “These cups have been organized almost since the founding of the ‘Tornado’ Basketball School. Coaches of the main teams also follow Tornadukai and Tornadiečiai games, as it is important that talented players do not stay too long in beginner groups and have the opportunity to develop at a higher level.”
The internal championship becomes not only a competitive platform but also an important stage of selection and development for young players aiming to represent the “Tornado” school at the highest level in the future.
